When my oldest son decided to attend college in California, I must admit it wasn’t upsetting to me at all! Despite the distance, it would give me the opportunity to visit one of my favorite places to photograph. On a recent trip to “visit my son”, I discovered the Manhattan Beach Pier. An often photographed spot, the pier offers many creative options to a photographer. On this particular image I was lucky to capture a beautiful sunset which served as a perfect backdrop to the dramatic pier.
I positioned myself under the pier in the surf with my tripod and took a series of bracketed images. Processed in Photomatix 4 and OnOne software, I was able to create a multi-exposure photograph that shows the detail of the underside of the pier while maintaining the striking sunset colors in the sky
