The Wave

Montauk Point, New york

This photo was taken on the beach in Montauk Point. I wanted to capture the motion of the wave in a long exposure. Using a tripod and my Canon 5D Mark II I took several exposures which I later blended in a final image. The longest exposure was about 20 seconds and from this image I was able to capture the mystical look of the water.

In Long Island City, New York you can find the landmark Pepsi Cola sign. At night it is all lit up and can easily be seen from across the East River in Manhattan. You need to get much closer if you want a good photo.

This photo was taken with my Canon 5D Mark II camera and a 17-40mm Canon “L” lens. A tripod is a must to prevent shaking. You don’t need a long exposure since the sign is pretty bright. Probably under 1-2 seconds. Post processing in Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS-5.

While walking through the boat yard in Montauk, New York, I was struck by the amount of fishing gear and the variety of colors that was all around me. I began shooting with my large zoom lens to get as close as possible to show all the fine detail in the nets. This also enabled me to get a macro feel to the image without the need of a tripod.

Shot with a Canon 5D Mark II and a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 “L” lens. Post processing in Lightroom 5 and Photoshop CS-6. Detail and color enhancement with OnOne 7 software.

On a recent trip to Montauk Point this summer, my wife and I were driving along East Lake Drive and spotted these American flags blowing in the breeze. I immediately pulled over and took a series of photos. The first image is the one you see above. I hadn’t changed my camera setting from my previous shoot and the image was grossly over exposed. At first I thought that it would be deleted, until later on that day when I looked at it again and realized it may be worth processing. After a little post processing, I was glad that I didn’t delete it. This is a great reason why you shouldn’t quickly delete an image during a shoot until you have time to properly evaluate it later on.

This image was taken with my Canon 5 D Mark II camera and a Canon 70-200f/ 2.8 “L” lens. I waited for the flags to unfurl before shooting. Post processing in Lightroom 5 and Photoshop CS 6.

This photo was taken shortly after sunrise from the surf in Montauk Point, New York. The difficulty of getting this shot in the surf from this angle was that it had to be taken from the water. It was hard setting up the tripod and maneuvering over the slippery rocks. Several times I almost fell into the water with my camera. Luckily, I was able to get my balance before losing all my gear! Next time I’ll have to remember to wear the proper water shoes. Your bare feet are no match for slimy rocks!

I took three exposures at ( -2,0,+2) on my Manfrotto tripod using my Canon 17-40mm “L” lens with my Canon 5D Mark II camera. Processed in Photomatix 4, Lighroom and Photoshop CS-5 . Detail and color processing in Topaz Adjust.
